PACKAGING: THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY TO IMPRESS

We understand it is important to get your product in one piece!

We understand it is important to get your product in one piece!

It may be the last step in getting product out the door, but a company’s packaging presents an important first opportunity to impress a customer and ensure repeat business. While not the most glamorous aspect of manufacturing, packaging is a science.  Everybody who has received their fragile merchandise intact from thousands of miles away, certainly appreciates the extra effort. Howard Elliott’s team strives for a perfect end result with every single order. We recognize that regardless of the distribution channel, how a product is packed is just as important as how it’s designed and how quickly delivered.

We pride ourselves on maintaining a damage rate of less than 2.5% for all of our major retail AND e-commerce customers. We even get a chuckle sometimes in reading customer comments where they “complain” that there is soooo much packaging protecting our products!

Specifically, how are Howard Elliott’s packaging techniques better than our competitors? Well, to start our team meets with packaging specialists at FedEx monthly to evaluate our current shipments, damages and repeat “offenders.” Here we evaluate what changes need to be made at the item level and globally across the line as a whole, to again, guarantee that the goods will arrive to the customer in one piece. Items are regularly sent to the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) testing lab to further ensure compliance.

On the factory floor, extra fragile mirrors and accessories are over packed with an additional layer of packaging for small parcel shipments. Our large scale, LTL shipments are enhanced with extra supports and strapping on their pallets. Extra packaging is also added internally, where necessary, to prevent in-house breakage. Sometimes, we utilize extra foam peanuts or polyurethane wrap, while other products require additional corner reinforcement.

Daily, we’re challenged to match the right packaging with each item of our diverse offering of product, which features a great variety of sizes and materials. Our team studies and tests each piece individually, and we monitor the status of all of our products on a continuous basis. We enlist the help of experts in packaging supplies to assist us with this difficult task.

Today’s new business channels continue to challenge us to explore the latest and most cost effective ways to package our products. We even go so far as to create wooden crates for some of our customized product specifically meant for hospitality and high design distribution channels.

So while over packing may be discouraged when traveling, here at Howard Elliott, it’s one of the integral elements to our successful “Signature of Design” formula. From start to finish, we’re dedicated to making sure our exclusive products arrive exactly as our customers expect, and ready to become statement pieces right out of the box. We invite you to experience our packaging excellence on your next order – you won’t have any complaints about over-packing!

MIRROR, MIRROR NOT ON THE WALL

Wait, WHAT? Mirrors have traditionally always gone on the wall! Well we are in an age of thinking outside the box and we like to find new and innovative ways to be different and ahead of the trends. We want to be different, we want to stand out, we want to be the trendsetter.

We here at Howard Elliott are no different. We make mirrors. And we also like to find different ways to display and use a mirror. Check out these instances of mirrors NOT on a wall.....

Events are always interesting ways to use mirrors. Check out this image of our Amalfi Mirror used as an accent for a floral display.

Here at Howard Elliott, we are forging new frontiers in product, pricing and marketing programs that truly cater to the personal style and distinct business needs of our retail, design and hospitality customers.

OH THE PLACES YOU'LL GO...

Oh, the Places You'll Go by Dr. Suess

Oh, the Places You'll Go by Dr. Suess

I think that every teen gets this book when they graduate High School or College. After all, Dr. Seuss had some great words of wisdom as it pertained to “gourmet” food, appropriate cat attire and how to count fish. So why wouldn’t he have infinite wisdom about the places we will go in the future? The book starts:  “Congratulations! Today is your day! You’re off to great places! You’re off and away!” When I received the book all those years ago, those simple sentences meant nothing to me…I was off to college a mere 500 miles away, and it was just a book. I didn’t have any idea of what the future held for me.

John Haynes & I in the High Point Showroom

John Haynes & I in the High Point Showroom

When I started my career in this industry 10 years ago, I was told that in a few days after I started, I would be headed off to High Point, North Carolina - The Furniture Capital of the World! Being new to the Home Furnishing Industry, I had no idea what to expect. I wasn’t a huge traveler and I certainly would have never expected to love the travel as much as I do. Never did I think that first trip would open me up to a world of trips all over the country and (hopefully soon) around the world! I am sitting in my office today for the first time in over two weeks, after having traveled to both coasts to work with our sales force and customers.

Each day is an adventure, full of new people, new locations and sometimes (as happened in my recent trip to New England) a new round of “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” situations. I’ve had to learn to simply roll with it; planes are late, appointments get cancelled and sometimes things simply don’t go as planned. But at the end of the day, that is what makes it an adventure!

As the Director of Sales for Howard Elliott, I get to be out across the country meeting our customers and see how they use Howard Elliott in their businesses. The display and merchandising creativity that our customers display is truly incredible. Each display and store is just as unique as each individual store owner or designer.

Our customers are what keep me going…seeing them at the trade shows is almost like getting to go to camp a few times a year to see all of my friends! July means another camp session and I can’t wait to catch up with everyone in Atlanta and/or Vegas!

DISTINCTIVE DESIGN ELEMENTS MAKE MAJOR IMPACT

After the Spring High Point Market,  Home Accents Today interviewed our president, Brian Berk, about the outlook of home decor in 2016. Read the full article below:

"Distinctive new design elements – from V-shaped grooving and intertwined mirrored frames to cut geode agates – are some of the headliners this season from Howard Elliott. Showcasing innovation in both its materials and finishing techniques, these latest introductions also reflect the value that Howard Elliott’s wall décor has come to represent to both retail and design customers. Getting ready to mark his company’s 15th anniversary this October, President Brian Berk outlines Howard Elliott’s 2016 design perspective here.

What are the main attractions of your company’s 2016 presentation?

Click the image to view the Bogart Mirror

Click the image to view the Bogart Mirror

In High Point, we introduced a collection of oversized mirrors that feature V-shaped grooved bevels, where a bevel is created in the middle of the mirror into creative geometric patterns. These pieces measure up to 90 inches high, and are complemented with brushed gold and brushed nickel decorative hardware. One of the decorative mirrors introduced in this collection is the Bogart mirror, a handsome piece that features an Art Deco-styled rectangular wood frame finished in a smooth matte black. Its grandiose size makes it a perfect focal point for any room of the home. Another standout item has been our Aleena mirror – a stunning piece that is composed of intertwining mirrored sections that gracefully form a scalloped octagonal shape. The frame is then trimmed in champagne silver leaf borders. Our new Geode mirrors in different shapes are composed of black and gray geode agate pieces, creating a look of natural cut stone that has really attracted some strong attention. We also continue to integrate vibrant colors into the finishes of our decorative mirrors and wall art, judiciously adding rose gold, champagne and copper, to name a few, as added points of interest.

What design statement does your wall décor make?

Our design statement speaks to a high design clientele while still focusing on offering a perceived value. We offer a full assortment that complements rooms from all four major design styles, with a strong concentration on transitional styling.

Why do customers come to Howard Elliott for their wall décor?

People gravitate towards us because of our diversity, highlighted by our unique finishes, interesting textures and distinctive shapes. Our selection is second to none, even among companies that are significantly larger than ours. We also have a strong customization program, and pride ourselves on being able to offer something for everyone. Howard Elliott also strives to create accessory pieces that are multi-functional. A perfect example is a collection of textured bowls and trays that double as wall décor that we recently introduced at market. They create a three-dimensional focal point guaranteed to be a conversation piece. Buyers who saw the pieces in High Point couldn’t resist reaching out and touching them!

How do you rate the current popularity of the category?

It’s as strong as ever, and there is certainly more competition. Several seminars I recently attended spoke about the sheer number of people that will be entering the market to purchase wall décor for years to come. This new audience may not purchase the way customers traditionally did, but it’s certainly refreshing to know that the sweet spot for home furnishing consumers is between the ages of 35 and 55. This new group surpasses the “baby boomer” generation in sheer quantity, representing 78 million people. This new era of consumers should provide a nice increase in potential business for many years to come."

YOUR HOME | YOUR STYLE

"Your home should tell the story of who you are and be a collection of what you love."
~Nate Berkus

Your HOME: It is your place, your haven, your sanctuary. It is where you LIVE. Not just sleep, eat and keep your stuff. That is a house; nothing more than a building. But a home, a home is a place where memories are made, where friends gather, where family creates happiness, where you can be totally...YOU. So it only makes sense that you surround yourself with accents and decor that define your personality. Because your home is in fact an extension of you!

As an Interior Designer or a Retailer, it is important that you find that perfect piece for your client or customer that makes them exclaim, "That's the one! That is the perfect piece for MY home." With so much out there it can be hard to scour all the selections, all the vendors to find product to offer your discerning clientele.

But look no further! Howard Elliott has put together an entire collection with a myriad of finishes, styles and textures to fit any design style. Watch this short video to see the scope of our collection which will keep your customers coming back time and time again.

Your home says who you are, and you carefully select decor to reveal your style and personality. With so much out there it can be hard to find that perfect piece. Howard Elliott has put together an entire collection with a myriad of finishes, styles and textures to fit any design style.

GIVING BACK. REFLECTIONS FROM BRIAN BERK

A few weeks ago, I attended my daughter’s Junior High School graduation. Preparing myself for the never-ending speeches by school administrators, I was pleasantly surprised by one part of the presentation that took me by surprise. I had an overwhelming sense of pride to learn that these fourteen year old young adults were not only being taught how to be charitable, but that many of them took leadership roles and were self-motivated to take part in charities and causes all on their own! The causes ranged from volunteering for Feed my Starving Children to raising money for children with cleft lip and palate. I, myself was also able to participate in helping the class make and package food to be sent to underdeveloped nations through Feed our Starving Children.

I am not sure how many of you are sports fans, but I personally felt a huge loss with the death of “The Greatest”, Muhammad Ali. Ali’s larger than life persona not only talked the talk, but also walked the walk, backing up all that he said with conviction and action. I have really enjoyed reading about the man beyond the gloves. Ali was a philanthropic man and was quite generous with his time and money especially with children and the Special Olympics.

While donating money to charitable causes is certainly gracious and compelling, it is far more challenging to set-aside time in today’s busy schedules and donate one’s time. At Howard Elliott, we have been making sure that we give back to the community and worthy causes with our time and energy, as well as our checkbook.

Colleen Daly, our Director of Sales, plus the entire team that attended the ARTS conference in New Orleans, LA last month donated their time and apparently a lot of “sweat” to Jericho Road. Jericho Road Episcopal Housing Initiative of New Orleans is a neighborhood-based nonprofit homebuilder that provides families with healthy and energy-efficient affordable housing opportunities. They partner with neighborhood residents, organizations and businesses to create and maintain a stable and thriving community.

It is a true privilege to be a supporting cast member for all of these organizations that commit do so much for so many. I encourage everyone to find a cause that is meaningful to them and make a difference. As the great Ali said, “Don’t count the days; make the days count!“  Enjoy your summer!
